Forbidden West is your last chance for a free upgrade to PS5
For a long time, it was a standard policy for new versions PlayStation Owners: If you had the PS4 version, you could upgrade it to a PS5 version when it would be available. The policy existed to keep open portfolios; Because some players can feel inclined to wait for a superior version of the PS5, they might be tempted to delay the purchase of a game if they knew that better version was around the corner. But because Sony wins (roughly) the same amount of money regardless of the purchased version, and that players rarely buy several versions of the same product (skyrim fans not included), this policy could guarantee that the numbers of Sale of day 1 could be as high as possible.
But all good things must end. They tried to move forward with this policy change with the next horizon: Forbidden West, but after a massive reaction of the players, they had to come back. Forbidden West will probably be the last time we will see such a policy - all subsequent versions will follow a new upgrade scheme.
In an update of the blog, the CEO of Sony Interactive clarified what the change would mean:
I also want to confirm today that in the future, the exclusive Exclusive Playstation Cross-Gen titles (newly out on PS4 and PS5) - both digital and physical - will offer a numerical upgrade option of 10 USD of PS4 to PS5, Ryan explained. . This will apply to the next oriel of the war and GRAN TURISMO 7, and any other exclusive PS4 and PS5 cross-gen title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Is it a worse case? Undoubtedly. The new policy is always better than nothing, but players will definitely miss free updates. At the very least, it only applied to the proprietary titles. All that is manufactured by, say, Bethesda or Activision, will not have to follow the traces of Sony.
